Keep Seniors Safe at Home
Hours:
In 2011, Maynard’s wife, Dorothy, was seriously ill, and Maynard called Healthy Seniors of Steele County for some respite relief. A volunteer came to their home to relieve Maynard, but that lasted a short time as Maynard soon lost his wife to cancer.
Living alone in the community with no family nearby, Maynard needed help with a number of areas so that he could remain in his own home. We found the perfect volunteer for Maynard.
The gentlemen have formed a close bond, and the volunteer is “on-call” at all times for Maynard. He has taken Maynard’s car in for service, taken many rides together around the community, gone out for lunch, told stories, stayed with Maynard during doctor’s and dentist's appointments.
Maynard’s volunteer is a handyman and is willing to do whatever is necessary to keep Maynard living safely and independently in his home and to help him stay connected to his community. Recently they enjoyed a fun outing together: going to vote.
Maynard says his friend gives him a “sense of security”. He changes Maynard’s light bulbs, fixes the air conditioning, and even upgraded Maynard’s walker.
Once, Maynard became very weak and his volunteer, who lives about a block away rushed over and took Maynard to the hospital. Our volunteer stayed by Maynard’s side until family arrived from out of town.
Healthy Senior’s volunteer had helped his father the same way and says how he enjoys Maynard and is glad to be of service to him and doing things together. Our volunteer calls himself an advocate for Maynard and loves what he does.
Healthy Seniors of Steele County volunteers visit seniors in the comfort of their own homes, providing an opportunity for friendship and fellowship. Our volunteers are matched with seniors, providing the support system that many seniors need.
