Healthy Seniors of Steele County knows that there are times that you need a couple of hours to take care of your own appointments or to pick up needed supplies to care for your loved one. Give us a call and we will schedule one of our volunteers to sit with your loved one so that you can take care of yourself.
Robert, an 85 year old was told he would need to get regular shots in his eyes for macular degeneration. He also has other complications with his eyes. He learned he would need to travel 40 miles to Rochester for treatment. Robert is a caregiver for his wife who suffered a stroke. He was not able to leave her alone for the 5 hours it takes when traveling to Rochester for his appointments.
For the last 18 months we have been providing a respite volunteer for Robert to relieve the burden of caregiving. He is able to get to his scheduled appointments and not have to worry about his wife being home alone.
Kathy was struggling to care for her husband who has Alzheimer’s. Her husband’s health was continuing to decline and her son, who had been helping with the care of his father unexpectedly passed away. Kathy called Healthy Seniors to inquire about volunteer services as she had no support system in place.
“Imagine if you could help our Steele County seniors live independently and remain engaged in their community.”
Need a few hours to take care of yourself?
Our program found volunteers who could stay with Kathy’s husband while she attended doctor appointments and ran errands. Healthy Seniors volunteers came to their home about three times a month so Kathy could get a break from caregiving and also attend to her own health problems.
During a six month period, our program provided over 40 hours of respite to Kathy and gave her the comfort of knowing that her husband was not home alone.
