Improving Lives

Healthy Seniors of Steele County is improving the quality of the physical and emotional lives for our seniors by connecting them to resources and volunteers which allows them to remain living independently through our Healthy Partners Program and our Fall Prevention Assessments.

Healthy Partners is a twelve week in-home program concentrated on helping seniors identify risks of falls, exercise to improve flexibility, balance and strength, and light chore to help seniors reduce the risks of falling within their home.

Helping Steele County Seniors to live independently…

Don is an amputee who is confined to a wheelchair.  Healthy Seniors of Steele County completed a home safety assessment for Don as part of the new Healthy Partners program.  It was discovered that Don was in need of many things in his home: grab bars for his tub, a toilet riser and grab bars around it as well as a ramp to be able to leave his house in-case of an emergency.  Our Senior/Volunteer Coordinator contacted the Serviceman’s Club in Blooming Prairie to see if there were funds available to help Don out.  Don had an upcoming appointment the following week at the VA and brought information for the things he needed as recommended from the home safety assessment.  Approximately two weeks went by and work was completed to install his new bathroom.  The following week work was completed and he now has a beautiful long ramp built to his home.  Upon completion of the new Healthy Partners Program, which is a combination of home safety/fall prevention, exercise and light chore, Don’s doctor noticed a difference with his labs in the appointment after completion of the Healthy Partner’s 12 week program and he was told to keep up with what he was doing.

Fall Prevention Home Safety Assessments is a program designed to help decrease the number of falls for seniors to maintain independence in their own home.
